Doug Henry Hard Charger Award presented to Danny Casey
Heading into the final round of the Doug Henry Hard Charger Award, presented by
Yamaha, three supermoto pros had a mathematical shot at the top prize. Mach 1
Motorsports’ Danny Casey, Team DNA Energy Drink/AxiomTV/Shea Racing’s Johnny
Lewis, and Tuf Powersports/Loire Racing’s Robert Loire were within 10 points of
each other going into the XTRM/AMA Supermoto Championship round at USA
International Speedway in Shawano, Wisconsin this past Sunday, August 24. At
the end of the day, it was Casey who took the top honors.
During the practice sessions at round three, Casey and Lewis were running near
the same lap times while Loire wasn’t too far off their pace. All three riders,
as well as five other eligible athletes, qualified for their respective main
events. In the Lites Main, Casey, Lewis and Loire all had problems. Casey
crashed after holding third for nearly half the race and ended up finishing
fifth after working his way back up. Lewis was in fourth early in the race and
closing in, then had a mechanical failure, dropping out of the race to card
16th place. Loire, after a top five start, charged hard with a rear flat tire
the entire race and soldiered on to finish in 15th place. This put the three
riders in the same place they started the weekend: first, second and third
respectively with Casey taking the $1,000 Doug Henry Hard Charger Award.
Other athletes in the running had their fair share of problems. Loire’s
teammate, Timm Kiener, broke his leg in Saturday’s practice and did not race.
This allowed supermoto competitors, such as Kyle Jones and Andrew Hyder, to
move up in the fund-paying ranking. Also, Lewis’ teammate, Thomas Bordelon,
qualified for the Lites Main and on the sight lap his race bike had a failure
and he did not compete. The Doug Henry Hard Charger Award, presented by Yamaha,
paid through fifth place.
Multi-time AMA Supermoto Championship race winner and three-time AMA Motocross
Champion Doug Henry said, “The idea of a privateer fund for our three east
coast races made sense and I was glad to be a part of it. Thanks to the
promoters and Yamaha for stepping up. I look forward to next year.”
After round three’s final podium ceremony, MISuperMoto’s Dave Duprey presented
the Doug Henry Hard Charger Award funds to the top five riders at the Team
Graves Yamaha big rig. The three participating events were rounds two and three
of the XTRM/AMA Supermoto Championship in Connecticut and Wisconsin,
respectively, and the MISuperMoto X in Michigan.
